Does Facebook Make You Sad?

After my team mates have already written quite a few interesting posts about Facebook and other social media and after reading an article concerning a recent study about how Facebook is supposed to make us unhappier, I decided to investigate that matter a little deeper as well as adding some personal experiences to it.

What I Found
The articles I read were mainly based on studies of the Utah Valley University and Stanford University. In the study of the Utah Valley University around 450 students were asked about their experiences and emotions concerning Facebook. They were asked if they thought that many of their friends had a better life than they did, and if life seemed fair to them. Surprisingly (or maybe not?) many students answered that they felt that their friends were happier than they were and that life did not seem fair to them.

McDonald’s knows how to do it!

Background

The base for McDonald’s was created by the McDonald brothers Richard and Maurice, when they opened their first restaurant in San Bernardino in California in 1940. After a complete rearrangement and redesign, they had a new opening of their fast-food restaurant with self-service in 1948. Five years later, the golden M (so-called “Golden Arches”) adorned a restaurant for the first time. Actually, McDonald’s creation was “on accident”. In 1954, Ray Kroc only wanted to sell some milkshake-mixers to the McDonald brothers. But then he was so fascinated by their restaurant and its concept of fast food with high quality and friendly service with low prices, that he acquired the license to open restaurants with the same principle. So he opened the first McDonald’s restaurant in 1955 in Des Plaines, Illinois. The franchise-system of McDonald’s was born! Read the full post »

The Reason Why You Won’t Find McDonald’s On A Lonely Island

Background
Have you ever actually thought about that question? Probably not. Why should you? Well, I thought about it because I wanted to dig deeper into the topic of which factors influence a location decision for restaurants. You would be surprised of how many things you actually have to consider. What I did first was doing a little brainstorming to try to find all the factors I could imagine which could influence such a decision. This is what I came up with and what I will explain later in greater detail:

Facebook knows what you did last summer (and will never “forget”).

After Elisa talked a lot about Google and I talked about all kind of different platforms in my last post, I decided to dig deeper in the Facebook topic. 800 Million people use Facebook nowadays. They post photos, videos, their location, write birthday greetings and chat to eachother.
Nearly everyone knows about the controverse privacy policies of Facebook which as you can see here have been increasing incredibly in words in the last years:

Why would they need so many words to explain their privacy policies if everything were legally correct?

Be the DJ! – with the “social jukebox”

Thanks for your last post, dear Saskia! After having read that post, I was inspired for my own post and I was wondering how other bars, restaurants or stores choose their music and I found this: ROQBOT

Background – What is Roqbot?

“Roqbot is a social music service that engages the customers at bars, restaurants, events, and other venues by letting users interact the music played on sight directly from their phones…”  Read the full post »

Let the music play… and we won’t go away!

Remember my last post about „Music, Moods, and Marketing“? Well, I actually thought that the theory just isn’t enough and that I wanted to get a more detailed insight of how music and the right atmosphere work to improve customer satisfaction and therefore increase the probability of guest coming back to that place (which eventually leads to higher sales).

“Google – saves everything. Forever.” Forever ever?

Google – saves everything. Forever.

But does that really mean forever ever?

The Background

Nearly everyone uses the web, and a drastically increasing amount of the world’s population is using Social Media. To name just a few:

LinkedIn has about 100 million users, Facebook has more than 750 million active users of which more than 50% log on in any given day and more than 200 million people actively use twitter in their everyday life.

Businesses’ New Year’s Resolutions… with Social Media!?

While thinking about my new blog post I was eating chocolate.. most probably from Nestlé. Well, of course, it was Christmas! That’s what you do at Christmas.. eat, eat, eat! But what happens after having eaten all that crap? The New Year is about to arrive and people make New Year’s Resolutions! Often these resolutions have to do with losing weight, becoming fitter, stopping to smoke and all kinds of things related to health and looks. Somehow all the food companies manage to make you forget these resolutions during the year, so that you end up having the same resolutions again at the end of the year. Sounds familiar?

Music, Moods and Marketing

Christmas is over and everyone – me as well – is waiting anxiously to celebrate the New Year. The last few days I enjoyed Christmas cookies, a lot of family time, and Christmas songs being played all day long.

I am actually always looking forward to the day the first Christmas song is played on the radio or  the first holiday commercial is shown on TV. One of my favorite commercials is this one:

Ben & Jerry’s around the whirled

Giving gifts to others on its own birthday…

Every year since Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield founded Ben & Jerry’s in 1978, the ice cream company celebrates its annual birthday by having a “Free Cone Day” at their shops. Mmmh…FREE Cone Days?! Sounds awesome, doesn’t it? …Well…it IS!

It basically serves as an appreciation gift for Ben & Jerry’s customers and takes place around April. In addition, they also collect donations on that day for local social organizations. The most recent Free Cone Day was on April 12, 2011, so stay tuned for the next. They always celebrate that day in all different countries, not only in the US, but also in the UK or the most important for us: in Germany.Over one million free cones are given away each year which led to the company’s slogan:
